There is only one way to start out The Year of the Snake, and that is with an interview with Cameron Young, founder and executive director of the Center for Snake Conservation in Louisville, CO. It was my great pleasure to join Cameron and his friend Kevin Urbanek and a crew of other snake lovers on a search for the South Florida Rainbow Snake in December.
The crew didn't find a Rainbow, but they did find several other snakes and amazing animals. Several Eastern Indigo Snakes, a Gopher Tortoise, a Corn Snake eating some lunch and a couple of alligators were among the beautiful creatures they did find. On the show Tuesday, Cameron and I talked about the hidden biodiversity of snakes and how their not finding a Rainbow doesn't mean there aren't any at Fisheating Creek where they belong. We also talked about encountering snakes and how to observe, coexist and enjoy them safely. I also learned something positively fascinating about eels, which are what Rainbow Snakes eat.
I hope you'll take a minute to listen to the show and enjoy the slides taken by Kevin (see photo tab) in this beautiful wildlife management area.  Cameron has agreed to return to the show next quarter to discuss snakes of the world and how people in other cultures and locations regard the snakes that live in their parts of the world. I'm sure it will be a wonderful show!
